Similarly, only-1-block-wide doorways for the inner wall should also keep a lot of enemies out if they get past the outer wall (I've had scorpions spawn inbetween the walls, for example, but they need a bigger gap to fit through). Also makes a nice quick place to retreat to during battles to heal or dodge a charging enemy, and helps with the sometimes wonky resident AI pathing.Ĥb. Everything that can hurt the inner wall is basically too big to get through a 1-wide gap. Anything small enough to get through (mostly Hammerhoods) won't be able to hurt the inner wall. You can actually choose to leave 1-block wide gaps along the outer wall for easy human access. Do not try to gather them with the cannon as you will only destroy them permanently!Ĥa. Gathering the fortress blocks will require the best hammer.

Then you can just take the cannon down the hole and get all the obsidian you will ever want, right next to your base.ģc. If you don't want to keep checking, I think it usually took me about 10-15 shots to get clear down to the bedrock. Just set up a cannon facing the hill and keep blasting it - the arcing shots will eventually dig down far enough. You can also find it right next to your base by blasting into the hills until you get down past the chalk and pebblestone. The mountains of the monster base beyond the 1st teleportal are made of it. Obsidian can be gathered with the cannon once you build it. The only time I've seen the fortress blocks be destroyed in battle is by me being stupid with a cannon. Keep upgrading both walls (outer first) as you get better materials - first to Obsidian, and then to the blue fortress blocks you can steal from monster bases later on. The idea of the 2nd wall is to keep them far enough away they can't reach the base itself with their hits.ģa. Some of the really large enemies, while their body/movement is stopped by the walls, can still swing and hit deeply through them. This will give you a great start against random mobs.īuild a second wall outside your base (leave a 3-5 block gap between the inner and outer walls). Tips for defensive base-building in chapter 3:īuild a perimeter of stone around your town early on (not bricks!). I actually really enjoy chapter 3 - well, all the chapters since they all have different themes and feels. Maybe it's just because I enjoy my tiny, female builder hanging out with a bunch of musclemen, but Kol and Galenholm had some of the most charm to it for me, so much that I'll probably do ANOTHER town here, eventually. Ironically, I actually like chapter 3 the best. I personally started a western-themed town, but between the 32x32 space constraint and a lack of building materials that I liked, I've since scrapped it and decided to make a mountain, because why not? If you build a good train station, I'd be really interested to see how it turns out.

Hammerhoods, in particular, cannot break sandstone or clodstone, both of which can be obtained with your basic hammer. You may actually be able to build any walls you want, as thick as you want, outside of your town. Obsidian is actually obtained relatively early (if you use a special tool ) and, as always, is more or less immune to monster damage. Likewise, your "changing room" (like the armory or sewing station) is actually the hot springs, which means you have to have at least that at ground level because water. That said, legitimate tips: -Building high won't actually help you anywhere near as much in this one unless it is REALLY high (5+ blocks above flag level? Maybe more?) as there are monsters that jump. If you aren't happy with your town, you won't be happy with the chapter. As always, I will always advise to first and foremost build what you want, how you want.
